"gm" is the pilot episode from NGMI, a dystopian anthology series created by writer Mike Ford.

PREMISE
It is now 2022 and writers are still relegated to background noise as NFT Twitter continues its descent into an Orwellian state. Parasitic influencers propel low-effort, doomed PFP projects to the forefront of Twitter feeds under the guise of "gm."  The Instagram culture of constant bombardment with pretty pictures that immediately gratify us has all but muted the voices of writers in this burgeoning space. Poets, novelists, and those so unlucky to not yet have a word to describe their avant-garde efforts watch from the sidelines as radioactive dolphins and portraits of naked women in Dubai deserts sell for five figures with predictable cadence.

In the following years, the NFT community largely abandoned Twitter as its social media nexus in favor of GM, a "decentralized" alternative controlled by NFT influencers. The continued erosion of individual thought and free speech resulted in a platform on which non-influencers were only permitted to express thoughts with "gm," an acronym the founders of the network promoted as "the most versatile form of speech possible."

Those that dared post something beyond "gm" were labeled "writers," the worst possible social standing on GM. If an apologetic "gm" was not immediately posted to shed this writer status, a smart contract would initiate a death bounty, causing other users to compete to kill the writer. Upon the writer's confirmed death came the drop of a PFP of the writer's death mask, an artifact that's historically been reserved for society's most notable figures. Those that attempted to kill the writer received a coveted whitelist position, and displaying a lowly writer's death mask as one's profile picture represented the ultimate way to receive more "gm" replies on posts.

But what PFP would be complete without rarity traits? As part of the smart contract that generated each death mask, each writer's body of work was included as metadata. To prevent the writer's toxic ideologies from being perpetuated, each corpus of text was run through the SHA-256 hashing algorithm. Once even the most thought-provoking piece of writing had been transformed, each unintelligible hash was then assigned to one of nine possible "gm" archetypes. GM's cofounder stated "all written works, from Shakespeare to Hemingway, can be reduced to one of nine gms." Some even argued that all writing can be reduced to only one "gm" archetype, though this was considered too controversial as it would eliminate the ability to milk money from rarities.

For a lucky few users, each death mask drop also provided the ultimate opportunity to acquire a PFP with coveted utility: those that minted extremely rare "legendary" editions of a dead writer could actually create shill posts on GM not limited to "gm." These shill posts even appeared to originate from the dead writer's account to reinforce the founding team's vision that "even death cannot free us from gm."

Field of Dreams is a collection of 75 character portraits named after outstanding women writers. The portraits are combined and enhanced with 32 surreal background states.

Field of Dreams was developed during November 2021 - January 2022 and has gone live January 31. It is an adieu to the passing year. It is strong but fringe character portraits meshed into wild surreal landscapes.

Portraits get distorted severely in this fashion but many fundamental characteristics remain - especially the eyes and the mouth. The combinations are intense. It is the land coming together with the human in a strange poetic way.

I have built surreal generative character pieces from my photographs. I edited the photographs with VQGAN software and fed the results to create an initial set of founding characters. With these characters I built the set of 75 characters here by randomly mixing different traits of the founding characters.

The 75 characters are named after prominent women writers of great literature from Gertrude Stein to Harper Lee. First name basis.. Mostly..

I followed a similar route with the landscape element by working through several stages of experimentation and iteration to arrive at a large set of surreal landscape pieces. Upon testing them on the character set, I've chosen 31 background states + 1 transparent state that will yield the full character. Some of the states are from diverse collections I have created in order to make the output image less predictable and have a higher randomization element with expanded visual alternatives.

I organized the characters in to packs of 25 which combined with the background alternative yielded 2400 combinations with equal rarities per each character set. I've decided to limit the mint to 1000 characters so that there will be a surprise factor and final rarities will be harder to predict. 

I expect that even if fully minted the images will be rather different from each other than one would expect in such a project. Let's visit this if we ever come there..

Then there are 10 Legendary Editions. They are young men from the writings of these remarkable women writers. I've used the names rather liberally. I've made the men young to represent hope for the future. I've made them less decorated, less definite, more open to being shaped. Power shift.. For good..

So with the legendary editions included -- there will be 1000 possible combination minted at max and 1310 combinations will be forever gone. I am curious to see which images survive..

ACID METAL RABBIT HOLE is a generative art release symbolic to the nature of another whirlwind year. This relates specifically to the life of the protagonist in this creative blockchain space. The rabbit hole belongs to the rabbit therefore he must be this dishevelled rabid bunny with laser beam eyes that occupies it. The wormhole produces layers of overlapping colors and fragments of thoughts that swirl around the vortex creating a beautiful strong result from the pressure which has created what is essentially a precious metal.

This is a digital oil painting with multiple layers and combinations, as adapted from an original photograph I took while on Safari in the Serengeti in Tanzania, Africa.

From a distance, we could see a solitary Acacia tree with a beautiful leopard resting in a branch. As my lens settled in on the tree I could see the heat coming off the ground and the vast empty plains in all directions. For the leopard, this was her refuge. She was able to nap despite the nagging flies and wind, perhaps too tired to care, her legs hanging off the branch. She was alone but in her element. As we drove away into the empty plains I reflected on the moment and felt grateful. The struggle of life exists for creatures great and small. A tree in the Serengeti captures the gift of life, and the strife of nature.

There is one Legendary edition that will be minted as a finished copy of the original photograph.

The remaining editions are hand-painted in Adobe Fresco. I wanted to capture the beauty, diversity, and patterns I witnessed and be able to share that through a multitude of layers that could represent this moment in time, one that stays with me.

Original photograph taken with a Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 lens on a Nikon D800 DSLR camera body. The RAW 8K image was postprocessed in Adobe Lightroom before being exported to Adobe Fresco to apply layers of digital oil using an Apple Pencil as a brush and iPad as a canvas.
